MentalHealthMonth : [Social Connections]⠀
Every time we move to a new place (which we have done several times), I really struggle with leaving close friends and family behind and starting over. Maui has been extra challenging for me, especially because I mainly work from home, which can be isolating. I’m so grateful for new friends, and have been trying to connect with more people lately because I know how important it is for my mental health. ⠀
DID YOU KNOW? Loneliness is bad for your health. In fact, it can shorten your lifespan the same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day does, and is more dangerous to your health than obesity.⠀
WHY SOCIAL INTERACTION IS GOOD FOR YOU [Source: Mental Health America]:⠀
- People with strong social relationships are 50% more likely to live longer.
- A poor social support system makes it harder to recover from mental illnesses, while a strong one improves your overall outcome and the ability to bounce back from stress.
- Finding other people to relate to and doing things you enjoy are known to improve your mood and overall mental health.⠀
